ICD-10-PCS Root Operations

SWFC wants to help you understand the new coding system coming our way on 10/01/2013, so today I am going to talk a little about "root operations." Here are some words that will be used to locate "root operations" in ICD-10-PCS. Something we will all need to get used to using.

Excision: removal of, cutting out/off some of the body part without replacement (excision of skin lesion)
Resection: removal of, cutting out/off all of a body part without replacement (splenectomy)
Detachement: removal of, cutting out/off an extremity only at any level with replacement (above the knee amputation)
Destruction: eradication of some/all of a body part without replacement (fulguration of endometrium)
Extraction: pulling off/out of some/all of a body part without replacment (Suction Dilation & Curettage)

Keep your eye on this blog for more information regarding root operations in ICD-10-PCS by Ms. B and swfc.edu

Ms. B wants to know, do you know what the term "locum tenens" means when coding? Those are providers who cover a practice for a physican when they become ill, go on vacation, etc. They treat the patients as if it were their own practice, using established E&M for the established patients and a new patient level if the patient is new. Want to know more, www.locumanTenens.com or www.swfc.edu.

Southwest Florida College was mentioned in the August/September 2011 Edition of Lee Memorial Health System’s HealthyNEWS publication!

The August/September HealthyNEWS Edition, as published by Lee Memorial Health System, was distributed as an insert within the local papers on Friday, July 29th, 2011. Page 6 featured an article about Surgical Technicians as depicted below.

In the last paragraph, Carol Withers RN, OR nurse manager at Cape Coral Hospital mentions: “Because our health system partners with High Tech North and Southwest Florida College, most newly hired surgical technologies were trained in our hospitals. They already understand our health system, our surgeon’s styles and our emphasis on patient safety.”
